Summary
Aero Fighters Assault (sometimes called Sonic Wings Assault) drops you into a 3‑D dogfighting arena on the Nintendo 64, where a quartet of pilots battles the shadowy Phutta Morgana. Each mission is timed, and you rack up points by keeping your wingmen alive, conserving missiles and special weapons, and landing with as much plane health as possible. High scores can unlock one of four hidden bonus stages, and the single‑player campaign even hides extra aircraft – one unlocked via a secret code and another earned by completing every mission, including the bonuses.
At the start you choose from four distinct fighters, each sporting its own special weapon and missile type, and you can remix their paint schemes on the fly by pressing R in the selection screen. Two more planes become available in multiplayer once you’ve progressed far enough in the solo mode, and the game offers a two‑player deathmatch with four different play modes, including a unique “combat view” that gives a clearer picture of the dogfight.
Critics praised the realistic flight model, third‑person perspective and the variety of mission settings, but they also noted choppy frame rates, repetitive enemy‑boss loops, and a soundtrack and voice‑over that felt cheap. While some reviewers found the experience fun once the quirks were ignored, many compared it unfavorably to contemporaries like Ace Combat 2 and Paradigm’s own Pilotwings 64, leaving Aero Fighters Assault as a respectable but uneven entry in the N64’s flight‑sim lineup.
