Summary
Super Mario 64 (often called SM64) turns Princess Peach’s Castle into a sprawling 3D playground where every painting is a portal to a distinct course. The analog stick lets Mario sprint, wall‑jump, glide with the Wing Cap, become invulnerable with the Metal Cap, or slip through walls with the Vanish Cap, while Lakitu’s floating camera can be switched between third‑person and first‑person views for precise platforming. Health is tracked by an eight‑segment pie, replenished by yellow, red or blue coins, a spinning heart, or surfacing for air when underwater, and extra lives appear for every fifty yellow coins collected. Each of the fifteen main courses hides seven Power Stars, plus secret stars that reward coin‑collecting challenges, boss battles, races and puzzles, bringing the total to 120. Unlocking enough stars lets Mario climb the infamous "endless stairs" and, if you gather them all, Yoshi appears on the roof to hand over a developer message, a hundred extra lives and a super‑charged triple jump.
Storyline
Princess Peach invites Mario to her castle for a cake she’s baked for him, but when he arrives Bowser has taken over, imprisoning Peach and her servants with the power of the castle’s 120 Power Stars. The Stars are hidden inside the castle’s paintings, each acting as a portal to a world where Bowser’s minions guard a Star. Mario explores these worlds, collecting Stars and unlocking new rooms; defeating Bowser in hidden worlds yields keys that open three doors to higher floors of the castle. After gathering at least 70 Stars, Mario breaks the curse of the endless stairs and reaches Bowser’s final hideout, where he defeats Bowser in a climactic battle. Bowser escapes, swearing revenge, and gains the Wing Cap before flying back to the courtyard. Peach is freed from the stained‑glass window, rewards Mario with a kiss and the promised cake, and if Mario collects all 120 Stars he can fire a cannon to the roof, where Yoshi greets him and grants 100 extra lives.
