Summary

Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers flips the original’s static screens into a free‑roaming first‑person 3D space, letting me wander the crumbling corridors of Castle Shadowgate without loading screens. The core remains a puzzle‑driven adventure; there’s little combat beyond a few wandering warden and dwarf‑like guards that you merely avoid.

The control scheme is stripped down to two buttons – one generic action and one for item use – which speeds up interaction but can make sudden death traps feel harsher. Falling from a modest height or plunging into deep water ends your progress instantly, forcing careful exploration of every switch and levers.

Critics were split: N64 Magazine lauded the game’s moody atmosphere yet bemoaned the frustration of its countless instant‑death moments, while scores hovered around 4‑6/10 (GameSpot 4.6, IGN 6.2). A planned follow‑up, Shadowgate Rising, never saw the light of day as the N64 era faded.

Storyline

Centuries after the original Shadowgate, Lord Jair had defeated the Warlock and claimed the throne, but the kingdom slowly fell into a haven for thieves, bandits and other evils. The player assumes the role of Del Cottonwood, a halfling who was traveling in a caravan when bandits ambushed it and imprisoned him while his companions were slain. Del manages to break free and begins a quest that leads him through the Four Towers, each tower presenting a distinct task he must complete. He relies on ancient books and the ghosts of dead townsfolk to piece together Shadowgate’s lost history.

While exploring the bleak castle‑town, Del takes odd jobs for the few remaining villagers, gaining access to new towers and hidden areas. At one point the townspeople offer him a chance to leave the castle walls, but he refuses to continue his mission. He eventually learns from Lakmir that Belzar, a former student of Lakmir, is attempting to resurrect the Warlock Lord. Belzar believes he possesses the legendary Staff of Ages, but it is actually the uncontrollable Staff of Thunder.

Through the trials Del secures the true Staff of Ages and uses a Dragon’s Eye to activate the Staff of Thunder, killing Belzar and razing much of Shadowgate. The Warlock Lord still rises, but Del summons Jair’s spirit with the Staff of Ages to deliver the final blow, ending the sorcerer’s reign. With the threat vanquished, Del is whisked away on a dragon’s back toward new adventures.
