Summary
When I first heard about Rocket: Robot on Wheels, I was surprised to learn that it was Sucker Punch Studios’ debut on the Nintendo 64—an ambitious, physics‑first 3D platformer. Rather than shoe‑horning a hero into a static level design, the team built the game around how every object behaves, letting a unicycle‑based robot push, roll and juggle items with realistic gravity, mass and inertia.
The engine was groundbreaking: players solve puzzles by considering friction, weight and momentum, and every obstacle feels almost tangible. Each of the seven themed worlds is accessed from a central hub, and they hide 12 tickets and 200 collectible tokens that unlock new areas when you finish mini‑games, help NPCs, or locate hidden machine parts.
A quirky vehicle awaits in every world—for instance, the first area features a hot‑dog‑shaped car—adding another layer of physics‑based challenges, while tokens can be traded for new abilities or health boosters.
The game's backstory is almost as quirky as its gameplay. After Sucker Punch’s founders left Microsoft, they prototyped Rocket on a PC, faced rejection from Nintendo, and finally caught Ubisoft’s eye at E3 1999, leading to the launch that let us experiment with true 3D physics on a home console.
Storyline
Rocket: Robot on Wheels follows a maintenance robot named Rocket, built by Dr. Gavin, the owner of the Whoopie World theme park. The night before the grand opening, Gavin leaves for a party and puts Rocket in charge of the park and its masc mascots, Whoopie the walrus and Jojo the raccoon. Jojo, jealous of Whoopie, breaks free, smashes Rocket with a mallet, and steals all the tickets and tokens.
He also kidnaps Whoopie and begins sabotaging rides, sending the attractions into chaos. Rocket must chase Jojo through the various park areas, collecting the missing tickets and tokens along the way. Each recovered item brings him closer to confronting Jojo and rescuing Whoopie before Gavin returns.
After gathering most of the tickets, Rocket finally defeats Jojo, frees Whoopie, and meets Dr. Gavin as the opening day approaches. Gavin praises Rocket’s effort and, if every ticket is found, renames the park RocketLand—a change that leaves Whoopie less than thrilled.
