Summary

Ridge Racer 64 lets N64 owners dive into the classic arcade feel while adding a handful of exclusive tracks and a fresh roster of cars. The game pulls in familiar circuits from the PlayStation entries Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, rounding the total to twenty distinct courses that reward exploration with hidden unlockables. Because Namco licensed the series to Nintendo, this was the first Ridge Racer title that never saw an arcade cabinet or a PlayStation launch, and it showcases noticeably sharper graphics for the era. Critics generally praised its straightforward, high‑octane racing – GamePro’s Michael Weigand called it a “big improvement” over other N64 racers – though the multiplayer mode fell short of expectations. A 2004 DS remake, Ridge Racer DS, swapped the mascot Reiko Nagase for Gina Cavalli and leaned on the handheld’s touch‑screen and wireless play, while the original resurfaced on the Nintendo Classics service in early 2025 for a nostalgic rerelease.
