Summary

The Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil 2 manages to squeeze a two‑disc PlayStation classic onto a single 64 MB cartridge, a technical feat that still impresses. By aggressively compressing audio and video while leaning on the console’s real‑time processing power, the team delivered full‑motion cutscenes, Dolby Surround sound, and a dynamic resolution that peaks at 640×480 with the Expansion Pak. Beyond the compression wizardry, this port adds exclusive goodies: alternate costumes, a randomizer that reshuffles item locations each run, adjustable violence levels, and the 16 “Ex Files” documents that deepen the series lore. The analog stick replaces the original tank controls, offering a smoother, almost first‑person feel that Eurogamer called “borderline game‑breaking” in its favor. Critics praised the graphical polish—sharper textures, smoother animations, and perspective‑corrected models—while noting the FMVs suffered from heavy compression. Still, reviewers agreed the new features more than compensated for the missing “Extreme Battle” mode. Commercially, the N64 edition sold over 326 000 copies in the United States and helped the title become the fastest‑selling console game of its launch weekend, underscoring how a well‑executed port can turn hardware limitations into a showcase of creativity.

Storyline

Resident Evil 2 begins on September 30, 1998, two months after the first game, when the T‑virus has turned most of Raccoon City’s citizens into zombies. Rookie R.P.D. officer Leon Kennedy meets college student Claire Redfield, who is searching for her brother Chris. After being separated, each makes their way to the Raccoon Police Station, only to find the precinct largely dead and the city in chaos. The story follows the canon Claire‑A/Leon‑B route, which Capcom treats as the official timeline.

Inside the station, Leon and Claire encounter a relentless Tyrant known as Mr. X, air‑dropped by Umbrella to retrieve the new G‑virus. Leon meets Ada Wong, who claims to be looking for her boyfriend John, while Claire befriends a frightened girl, Sherry Birkin, who carries a golden pendant containing a G‑virus sample. Both protagonists learn that R.P.D. Chief Brian Irons was bribed by Umbrella to hide evidence of the G‑virus, a mutagen capable of creating the ultimate bioweapon.

The plot thickens when William Birkin, the Umbrella scientist who created the G‑virus, injects himself with the pathogen, mutating into a grotesque creature that spreads the virus through the city’s water supply. His wife Annette, desperate to protect their daughter, confronts Ada and tries to seize the pendant, only to be thrown over a railing. Ada discovers the locket’s sample and, after a brief clash, tends to Leon’s bullet wound, revealing her true mission to steal the G‑virus for an unknown organization.

Leon, Ada, Claire, and Sherry eventually reach an abandoned factory linked to Umbrella’s underground lab. After a brutal fight with the mutated William, Ada is mortally wounded while battling the Tyrant, which falls into molten metal. Before dying, Ada and Leon confess their love. Claire uses Annette’s dying instructions to create a vaccine that saves Sherry.

The survivors board an emergency escape train, where Leon destroys the now‑giant Super Tyrant with help from an unseen figure. The train self‑destructs, killing the monstrous William. Leon vows to take down Umbrella, Claire continues her search for Chris, and HUNK, an Umbrella operative, completes his G‑virus retrieval mission, hinting at future storylines.
