Summary

Quest 64, known as Holy Magic Century in Europe and Australia, was the first true RPG released on the Nintendo 64 in North America. I was instantly drawn to its bright, colourful graphics, which reviewers praised as proof that the console could handle compelling RPG visuals. The game’s spell system is its standout feature: each of the four C‑buttons maps to wind, earth, water or fire, and spirits found in the world let you level those elements and unlock fresh attacks.

Combat feels like a cross between Chrono Trigger and classic Final Fantasy II—your character stays put while enemies attack, and experience improves specific stats instead of a simple level‑up. There’s no money to hoard; items simply appear in chests or fall from foes, which streamlines the adventure but also leaves the world feeling a bit thin. Critics noted the gorgeous art and innovative magic but said the story and exploration lacked depth, making Quest 64 a charming yet short‑lived ride for RPG fans.

Storyline

Quest 64 drops you into Celtland, a fantasy medieval realm that feels like an enchanted version of Ireland. You play as Brian, an apprentice mage eager to prove himself. His journey begins when his father disappears from the monastery of the mages.

Brian soon discovers that his father is tracking a thief who stole the legendary Eletale Book, a tome of great magical power. The quest pushes the young mage across the land to recover the stolen pages and uncover the thief’s motives.

Along the way, Brian must gather the scattered elemental gems, each guarded by powerful criminals who have hoarded them for their own gain. Collecting all the gems is the only way to face the final boss and bring the Eletale Book back to safety.
