Summary

Puyo Puyo~n Party, the fourth entry in the series, keeps the classic drop‑and‑match feel of Puyo Puyo 2 while adding a charge meter that fills as you clear chains. When the meter is full each character can unleash a unique special ability, turning a simple puzzle into a tactical showdown.

The home console versions layer a “Special Rule” onto each grid, meaning the starting layout and board rules are preset for extra challenge. Endless modes let you experiment with fields larger or smaller than the standard 6×12, and a Free Battle mode lets you face any unlocked character at will.

The Nintendo 64 edition swaps the Dreamcast’s soundtrack for a fresh set of tunes, drops voiced cutscenes due to cartridge limits, and retains four‑player support. Its Transfer Pak links to Pocket Puyo Puyo SUN, unlocking exclusive artwork that can’t be seen otherwise.

Artist Sunaho Tobe’s bold visual style sets this title apart, and the name itself is a playful nod to the Japanese word “yon” (four). Though it never left Japan, it marks the final Madou‑era Puyo Puyo before the series shifted direction.

Storyline

In Puyo Puyo 4 – Puyo Puyon Party, the adventure kicks off when the Dark Prince is perusing a magical library and uncovers a mysterious black box that bursts open on its own. The following morning a travelling Puyo Circus rolls into town, and Arle Nadja and her companion Carbuncle answer the invitation, only to be greeted by Pierrot, a jester‑like figure with a hidden agenda.

Arle quickly senses that something is wrong when Carbuncle vanishes during a magic trick. She battles through a gauntlet of foes—Draco, Serilly, Witch, Chico, Schezo and Rulue—while Rulue warns her that the Dark Prince has been brain‑washed by a stronger enemy. After freezing the other characters, the Dark Prince is defeated, revealing his manipulation and prompting the appearance of a doppelganger Arle, who claims to be the "real" Arle from a previous world. The two clash, and Arle emerges victorious as the impostor fades away.

With the doppelganger gone, Carbuncle reappears, his forehead gem glowing before unleashing a blinding beam. The screen fades to white, then black, and the credits roll, concluding the circus‑themed showdown.
