Summary
I was amazed when I first saw Hey You, Pikachu! demo at Space World ’97 – the idea of actually talking to a Pokémon felt wild. The game uses the N64’s Voice Recognition Unit and a microphone, letting you speak from a 256‑word database and have Pikachu respond in real time. After earning Pikachu’s trust, it moves into your house and you spend days on three themed activities: Daring Days, Discovery Days and Play Days, each pushing you to collect food, go fishing or simply picnic. Every successful task nets Pika Points, the currency you spend at Abra’s Shop for new goodies. All progress is saved to the cartridge’s internal EEPROM, so the bond you build carries over. The North American title was originally going to be Pikachu VRS, but “Hey You, Pikachu!” proved catchier for the market.
Storyline
In Pikachuu Genki de Chuu for the Nintendo 64, you start by assisting Professor Oak with his PokéHelper experiment. During the test you encounter a wild Pikachu, befriend it, and invite it to live in your house. After exactly 365 in‑game days, Oak informs you that the Pikachu is still a wild Pokémon and must be released back into nature. You trek into the woods, repeatedly saying “goodbye,” and the Pikachu finally understands it has to return to the wild. Once the credits roll, you linger in the front yard, reminisce, and—surprisingly—Pikachu reappears, letting the adventure continue as if the release never happened.
