Summary
Perfect Dark still feels like the pinnacle of N64 engineering. Using an upgraded GoldenEye engine, it delivers optional high‑resolution graphics and Dolby Surround sound, but only if the Expansion Pak is inserted—making the cartridge a literal plug‑in to unlock the full experience. The title pushes the console’s limits while keeping frame rates solid enough for precise combat.
The single‑player campaign puts me in the shoes of Carrington Institute agent Joanna Dark for 17 missions, each packed with gadgets like night‑vision goggles and door decoders. Weapons have both primary and secondary functions; I can dual‑wield two guns or switch a knife for a rocket launcher instantly. Because there’s no jump, crouching, crawling or dropping from ledges become key for stealth.
Multiplayer rounds shine with up to four locals and eight configurable bots, spawning across classic arenas from close‑quarter combat to large capture‑the‑flag fields. The mode lets you toggle friendly fire, set custom win conditions, and even tackle 30 built‑in challenges that unlock new weapons, player skins, and bot personalities. Every match tracks stats like damage dealt and distance travelled, rewarding skilled play with medals and ranks.
Storyline
Perfect Dark follows Joanna Dark, an elite Carrington Institute agent known as 'Perfect Dark' due to her flawless training scores. In 2023 an interstellar war pits the Grey‑like Maians against the reptilian Skedar, who disguise themselves as humans using cloaking tech. On Earth the rival corporations Carrington Institute and dataDyne clash; dataDyne, led by Cassandra de Vries, trades alien tech for a powerful AI called Dr. Caroll. Joanna’s first mission extracts the AI from a dataDyne lab, but the institute’s founder Daniel Carrington is captured, prompting a chain of rescues, presidential kidnapping plots, and a showdown involving a deep‑sea vessel, the Pelagic II, and an ancient alien spacecraft.
The Skedar aim to weaponise the spacecraft against the Maian homeworld, while dataDyne seeks the same weapon for Earth domination. Joanna, aided by a Maian protector named Elvis, restores Dr. Caroll’s original personality, triggers a self‑destruct, and survives a crash of Air Force One. In the final act she confronts the Skedar leader aboard their ship, defeats him, and escapes with Elvis just before a Maian orbital bombardment.
