Summary
NFL Blitz: Special Edition cranks the gridiron into over‑the‑top arcade mode, swapping the NFL’s methodical playbook for pure, high‑octane chaos. The N64 version updates everything to the 2001‑02 season, so you’re battling with the actual teams, uniforms and schedules you’d see on TV, but the rules are anything but traditional. Seven players line up on each side, positions blur, and a first down stretches to a whopping 30 yards, while the clock pauses after every snap and quarters run a blistering two minutes.
Late hits, pass‑interference and wild celebrations are not just allowed—they’re encouraged, and the game rewards the trailing team with deeper kick‑offs to keep scores tight. Signature moves like the "Da Bomb" let quarterbacks launch the ball the length of the field, and defenders can spin opponents into wrestling‑style suplexes that sometimes add extra yards. Even the extra‑point is automatic, though the occasional miss keeps things interesting.
Midway later dialed back some of the most extreme violence, but the title still flaunts censored profanity and even hides Mortal Kombat legends Raiden and Shinnok as unlockable extras, a cheeky nod to the studio’s fighting‑game roots.
