Morita Shogi 64 is a niche Japanese virtual board game that landed on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, following up on the launch title Saikyō Habu Shōgi. Though it never left Japan, the game packs a full shogi experience into a cartridge that feels surprisingly modern for its era.
What sets it apart is the built‑in RJ‑11 modem port, a rare feature on a home console. Back then it let players dial into a nationwide network and challenge strangers from across the country, a service that has long since vanished.
In recent years the cartridge’s hardware has attracted a different kind of attention: hobbyists discovered that the modem interface can be abused to execute arbitrary code, turning the console into a homebrew platform for enthusiasts who love to tinker with retro tech.
