Summary
Mischief Makers stands out as Nintendo 64’s very first 2‑D side‑scroller, and Treasure’s inaugural Nintendo title. The game lives in a striking 2.5D world where pre‑rendered 3D backdrops frame Marina’s 2‑D action, a technique borrowed from Donkey Kong Country but given a new twist. The core mechanic is the “catch‑and‑shake” system: you can grab almost any object, vibrate it for hidden items or turn it into a missile, then hurl it at enemies – a fresh blend of platforming, puzzling, and combat that feels oddly satisfying. Levels span five distinct worlds, each packed with hidden yellow gems that stretch the final cutscene, while a golden gem in every stage pushes you toward 100 % completion. I love how Marina’s jet‑boosted moves let you hover, slide and roll across rotating screens, and the occasional Clancer stand‑in introduces a different punching style altogether. All of this makes Mischief Makers a quirky, tech‑savvy surprise in a cartridge library dominated by 3‑D adventures.
Storyline
In Mischief Makers you play as Marina Liteyears, an Ultra‑InterGalactic‑Cybot maid. She sets out on Planet Clancer to rescue her creator, the robotics genius Professor Theo, after he is kidnapped by the Emperor’s Imperial forces.
The planet is on the brink of civil war; the Emperor has brain‑washed the native Clancers, who now wear identical sad faces with red glowing eyes. Loyal troops still follow King Aster and aid Marina, letting her grab, shake and throw obstacles in her path.
As Marina pursues the Professor, she encounters Calina, a petulant Clancer who mimics her actions for comic relief. Along the way she must free the professor and help spark a rebellion against the evil empire.
