Summary
Lode Runner 3-D takes the classic cat‑and‑mouse formula and drops it into a loosely three‑dimensional world on the Nintendo 64. While most of the action feels like a 2‑D platformer, the camera occasionally lets you stride sideways, turning the familiar spiraling stages into a modest 3‑D challenge.
Each of the five worlds is hidden behind a set of five collectible cards, so you have to scour every stage before you can move on. Stages are broken into four sub‑levels that demand enough gold to power a portal to the next area. Along the way you keep dodging enemies by sliding on ropes, scaling ladders, and drilling holes, while new tools and obstacles appear in later worlds to keep the puzzle flow fresh.
Reviews were mixed but leaned positive—IGN gave it 7/10, noting how the game adapts the original concept into a new format, and GameSpot mentioned the added difficulty and slower pace. The average scores hover around the 70‑percent mark, indicating a respectable, if not legendary, entry in the series.
Storyline
In Lode Runner 3‑D (often just called Lode Runner 3D), the action picks up after Jake Peril’s earlier escapades. He’s settled on his home world, sharing a quiet life with his wife, Jane Peril.
The peace shatters when the Mad Monk Emperor of Planet Pandora emerges, pilfering every ounce of Earth’s gold. The stolen treasure triggers a galaxy‑wide crisis, and Jake is called back into the tunnels. He must battle the Mad Monks and ultimately confront their enigmatic leader to restore the gold and save the universe.
