Summary

Lego Racers lets you hop into the driver’s seat of a Lego minifigure and tear around a handful of themed circuits – Castle, Pirates, Space and Adventurers – each packed with a single shortcut and a mix of power‑up bricks. Before the green light you can pull off a Turbo Start, then pepper the race with power slides, Super Slides and a variety of power‑ups (Projectile, Hazard, Shield, Turbo) that you collect on the track, sometimes stacking them with up to three “power plus” bricks for extra punch.

The game’s Build Menu is where the real fun kicks in: you start with a modest brick palette, then unlock more pieces by winning races, letting you assemble custom cars and minifigures brick by brick. The developers tied the number and placement of bricks to handling, acceleration and top speed, so a heavier build feels slower but more stable. A Quick Build option offers ready‑made presets for those who just want to race.

Three single‑player modes (Circuit Race, Single Race, Time Race) challenge you to out‑score the host, beat a ghost car, or simply enjoy a single track, while Versus Race drops the AI for split‑screen duels. The HUD keeps tabs on position, laps and power‑up status, and you can toggle between speedometer, course map or close‑up map.

Critics were split: Nintendo Power praised the cute, innovative tracks, IGN noted a consistent framerate and tight handling, but NextGen complained of a sluggish, top‑heavy feel. Behind the scenes, High Voltage Software’s Kerry J. Ganofsky dreamed up the build‑and‑race concept, and lead programmer Dwight Luetscher devised a formula that let hundreds of Lego elements mesh into a single solid car model.

Storyline

Set in the fictional Legoland universe, the single‑player mode of LEGO Racers follows a cast of minifigure characters as they compete in a racing competition created by the legendary champion Rocket Racer. Rocket Racer, celebrated as the greatest racing champion in Legoland, becomes bored after repeatedly beating every opponent and decides to organize a new contest.

To assemble the toughest field, he enlists his friend Veronica Voltage, a genius scientist and mechanic, who provides a dimensional warp machine that pulls the best racers from Legoland’s history. The game features a total of 24 rival racers, with the main characters serving as circuit hosts: Captain Redbeard (Pirates) for circuit one, King Kahuka (Islanders) for circuit two, Basil the Batlord (Fright Knights) for circuit three, Johnny Thunder (Adventurers) for circuit four, Baron Von Barron (Adventurers) for circuit five, Gypsy Moth (Insectoids) for circuit six, Rocket Racer himself for circuit seven, and Veronica Voltage as the time‑trial rival.
