Summary
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards takes Kirby into his first true 3‑D outing on the N64, where the hero must piece together a sacred crystal shattered by the alien force Dark Matter. The game’s 2.5D side‑scrolling stages are split across six worlds, and every level hides fragments of the crystal as well as stars, food, and collectible cards.
A highlight is the new Power Combo system: by eating enemies Kirby can gain one of seven copy abilities, and any two can be fused to create 28 more potent mixes. Development began in September 1997 and the project was initially slated for the cancelled 64DD add‑on, later shifting to the standard cartridge and swapping the analog stick for D‑pad control about a year before launch. Up to four players can also jump in for three quirky minigames, adding a modest multiplayer dash to the otherwise solo platform adventure.
Storyline
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards begins on Ripple Star, a fairy‑populated world protected by a great crystal. Dark Matter invades, blackening the sky and prompting the queen to send Ribbon away with the crystal. Three dark orbs strike, shattering the crystal into dozens of pieces (one source lists 74 shards, another 100), which scatter across the galaxy as Ribbon crashes on Popstar.
Kirby finds a shard, gives it to Ribbon, and the pair set out to recover the rest across six planets, gradually reassembling the crystal’s power.
They free artist Adeleine, King Dedede and his Waddle Dee, each briefly possessed by Dark Matter and requiring a battle to release.
When all shards are collected, Kirby defeats Miracle Matter/Dark Matter, causing the crystal to spawn Dark Star. Using the Shard Gun, Kirby and Ribbon destroy the final boss, 02, ending the menace.
