Summary
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine drops you into a globe‑spanning adventure where you whip, leap, swim and crawl through fully 3D environments. Across 17 chapters you’ll explore the ruins of Babylon, the labyrinths of Nubian kings, and other exotic locales while juggling a mix of period‑appropriate firearms, Red‑Army machine guns, bazookas, satchel charges, and Indy’s iconic whip and pistol. Puzzles and treasure hunts are woven into the action, and you’ll face off against Communist goons, strange monsters, and even robot guardians.
The Nintendo 64 version shines with Factor 5’s co‑development, adding real‑time lighting, refined controls and a responsive camera. Lock‑on targeting and C‑button item assignment make combat feel smoother, and the Expansion Pak unlocks high‑resolution graphics that showcase some of the prettiest texture work on the console. While the visuals and sound quality earned praise, occasional frame‑rate dips and minor texture glitches remind you it’s a product of its era.
Storyline
The year is 1947, the Nazis are defeated and the Cold War has begun. Soviet agents are digging at the ruins of the Tower of Babel, and the CIA sends archaeologist Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones to investigate. His old friend Sophia Hapgood, an operative of the CIA, recruits him after learning the Soviets, led by physicist Dr. Gennadi Volodnikov, are hunting a weapon called the Infernal Machine. The machine is said to be a device built for the Babylonian god Marduk that could out‑power any nuclear bomb.
Jones travels across the globe to retrieve four scattered parts of the machine before the Soviets can. He recovers one in a remote monastery in the Kazakh SSR, another from an active volcano on Palawan in the Philippines, a third in an Olmec valley in Mexico (where he is briefly captured and taken to a ship near the Canary Islands), and the last from a tomb near Meroë in Anglo‑Egyptian Sudan. Along the way he is aided and opposed by CIA boss Simon Turner and the Soviet doctor, each hoping to claim the parts for their own side.
In the final act the parts are used to activate the engine in the ancient Babylonian ruins, opening a portal to the Aetherium. Turner tries to sacrifice Sophia to the other dimension, but Indy kills him, rescues her, and defeats the malevolent Marduk. The portal collapses, they return to Babylon, and the three strangers walk off into the sunrise, joking about vodka. A bonus level lets Indy revisit the Peruvian temple from *Raiders of the Lost Ark* and discover a hidden golden idol.
