Summary
Quest 64, called Holy Magic Century in Europe and Australia, earned a spot as the very first role‑playing game on the Nintendo 64 in North America, raising expectations among fans of the new console.
When an enemy appears, the screen doesn’t switch to a separate battle arena; instead the player character is locked in place and the fight unfolds right there, while the four C‑buttons each summon a classic element—wind, earth, water, or fire—making spellcasting feel tactile and immediate.
Experience doesn’t come from a simple level‑up. Damage taken boosts defense, successful attacks raise attack, and each white spirit you discover lets you upgrade a specific element, unlocking fresh attacks and strengthening the old ones, a system reminiscent of Final Fantasy II’s stat‑based growth.
Money is absent entirely; every item is either looted, dropped, or gifted, and if you fall in battle you’re whisked back to the last inn you saved at, keeping all spells, experience, and unused gear, though anything consumed before death stays gone.
A compass‑style clock on the HUD tracks day and night, gating certain events, and the Japanese version added extra content to address the short, easy feel of the Western releases. Critics praised the graphics and inventive spell system but found the gameplay and story lacking depth.
Storyline
Holy Magic Century takes place in Celtland, a fantastical medieval realm that feels like ancient Ireland. You play as Brian, an apprentice mage who leaves his monastery to track down his missing father. Brian soon learns his father is hunting a thief who stole the mysterious Eletale Book.
Along the way, Brian must gather the scattered elemental gems, each guarded by powerful criminals. Collecting all the gems prepares him for the final showdown with the game's ultimate boss.
