Summary
Flying Dragon (Hiryuu no Ken Twin) blends classic fighting action with a surprisingly deep role‑playing layer. The Nintendo 64 title splits into two distinct modes, yet both share a roster of colorful combatants whose backstories feel like a mini‑anime anthology.
In the SD mode, characters level up, collect credits and equip treasure, turning each bout into a mini‑quest. I’m drawn to Ryuhi, the hot‑blooded Chinese Kung Fu master, and Hayato, a quiet Japanese Kobujutsu specialist, while the eclectic roster also includes a Mexican‑style luchador, a US Army‑trained wrestler, and even a telekinetic Aiki‑Jujutsu practitioner named Yuka. Unlockable oddities like the doll‑like Bokuchin and the boss Ryumaou add a quirky mystery to the progression.
The Virtual version swaps in fighters such as the ruthless Red Falcon, the elegant Chinese Kung Fu heir Min Min, Sweden’s kick‑boxing champion Kate, and a Japanese cyborg ninja named Raima. The ultimate sensei Gengai caps the lineup, embodying the pinnacle of Kung Fu mastery. Together, these modes give Flying Dragon a unique blend of arcade combat and RPG growth that still feels fresh for modern players.
Storyline
Hiryuu no Ken Twin (known in the West as Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll) is a Nintendo 64 fighting game that centers on a clash between the heroic Dragon Warriors and a dark underworld empire. The story follows Ryuhi, the series’ main protagonist and leader of the Dragon Warriors, who is joined by his friendly rival Hayato, fellow warriors Shouryu, Wiler, Min Min and others. Their pre‑battle banter hints that Shouryu and the mysterious Suzaku share a hidden past.
Suzaku, a scar‑marked villain styled after the vermillion bird of Chinese myth, serves as the right‑hand man of Ryumaou, the Devil King who rules the Underworld. Ryumaou’s clone appears as a playable character, while the true final boss is Shin Ryumaou, the original devil king. Some fans suspect that the Red Falcon character is actually Suzaku under an alias, given their identical outfits, moves and scar.
