Summary

GT 64 – Championship Edition is a niche racing title that carries the official All‑Japan GT Championship license, letting you drive the 1997 season’s cars and drivers on a handful of circuits. The Japanese release swaps the overseas tracks for two brand‑new Japanese courses, but the total track count remains surprisingly low – essentially three layouts, each with a short and long variant and mirror versions.

The game borrows a Gran Turismo‑style ranking system, rewarding consistent lap times and race finishes, and it even supports the Rumble Pak for that extra tactile kick. Saves are handled via the console’s internal EEPROM, with a backup option on a Controller Pak, which was a nice touch for a cartridge‑based N64 title.

Critics were largely unimpressed, pointing out the gap between the promised twelve tracks and the reality of three. While reviewers like Nintendo Power praised the energetic soundtrack and sound effects, most felt GT 64 fell short of both Gran Turismo and GTI Club, though it managed to be more fun than the contemporaneous Automobili Lamborghini. Notably, it turned out to be Ocean Software’s final published game before the company folded.
