Summary
Gex 64 drops me into the familiar TV‑world of the series, but the cartridge’s limitations give it a noticeably slimmer vibe. The game strips away the main menu, most cutscenes, and over 500 of Gex’s one‑liners, leaving just about a hundred voice samples. Those cuts free up space for an exclusive underwater adventure – the "Gecques Cousteau" level that takes us aboard a sunken RMS Titanic, with only a brief dry entrance before the deep‑dive begins. A few secret and bonus stages vanish, and the soundtrack stays intact thanks to its MIDI foundation, though some sound effects are tweaked. Aside from the missing audio and level content, the core platforming – tail‑whip, tail‑bounce, karate kick, and wall‑climbing – feels identical to its PlayStation sibling, making Gex 64 a leaner but still entertaining glimpse of early 3D platformers.
Storyline
After his victory over Rez in the Media Dimension, Gex retires to a quiet, solitary life. Two years later, while watching television, the screen goes blank and Rez’s image flashes, prompting two government agents to appear, abduct him, and interrogate him about Rez’s return. Gex initially refuses, saying he’s already saved the world, but the agents offer a huge sum of cash and gadgets, and he accepts. He leaves the headquarters and is greeted by a female operative named Agent Xtra, who wishes him luck.
In Gex 64: Enter the Gecko, the gecko hops through a slew of television‑channel themed levels inside the Media Dimension, eventually confronting Rez once more. During the showdown Gex drops a massive TV set onto Rez, severely weakening the villain. In a last‑ditch effort Rez claims through a television that he is Gex’s father, but Gex simply turns the TV off, leaving the claim unresolved.
The game’s final scene shows Gex sharing a hotel room with Nikki from the Pandemonium series, hinting at a quirky crossover ending.
