Summary

G.A.S.P!! Fighters' NEXTream, released in the West as Deadly Arts, tries to stand out on the Nintendo 64 with a surprisingly deep customization system. You can sculpt a fighter’s body type, height and move set, then test the creation in a dedicated training area before taking it into the eight‑character roster. After beating the standard cast, the game throws two oddball bosses at you – the cat‑masked Gouriki and the straw‑hated Reiji, who can morph into the ethereal Hikari or the purple‑bearded Yami, both of which become playable once unlocked.

The title offers a Versus mode for one‑on‑one or team battles, twelve arenas (nine from the start, three hidden), and adjustable difficulty from "very easy" to "expert" with tweakable round lengths. All progress, scores and custom fighters are saved to a Memory Pak, letting you polish your combos and chase higher point totals.

Despite these ambitions, critics were harsh: GameRankings aggregated a 41% score, with IGN calling the graphics stale and the controls terrible, while GameSpot dismissed it as basic and uninteresting. Even Japan’s Famitsu only gave it 19/40, cementing its reputation as a largely forgotten N64 fighting experiment.

Storyline

G.A.S.P!! Fighters' NEXTream (often just called GASP Fighters NEXTream) centers on a mysterious invitation that reaches a diverse roster of combatants. Each fighter receives a cryptic letter urging them to enter a legendary tournament shrouded in myth. As the competitors gather, the narrative hints at a vanished champion whose disappearance fuels the contest’s intrigue. The story unfolds through brief cut‑scenes that reveal the fighters’ motivations and the lingering mystery of the missing title‑holder. Ultimately, the game blends the quest for glory with the search for answers about the absent champion.
