Summary
Fushiki no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 2 – Oni Shuurai! Shiren‑jou! (commonly called Shiren the Wanderer 2) marked Chunsoft’s bold leap into 3‑D on the Nintendo 64. The core loop revolves around gathering stone, iron, water, earth and wood from procedurally shifting dungeons—either irregular “shuffle” layouts or grid‑like “random” ones—and using them to raise a castle before a wave of demons attacks. Combat stays true to the series’ turn‑based roots: each move or attack counts as a turn, and positioning matters, with diagonal steps letting you close gaps quickly. The title also introduced the Monster Pot, a pocket for capturing beasts that later resurfaced in other Mystery Dungeon games, and its resource‑mixing design was famously inspired by the board game Catan. Though never localized, it earned a 38/40 from Famitsu and sold nearly 284 000 copies in Japan, while a fan‑made English patch finally surfaced in 2021, keeping the quirky mix of exploration, castle‑building, and strategic resource management alive for new players.
Storyline
Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 2 – Oni Shuurai! Shiren‑jō! (often referred to as Shiren the Wanderer 2) serves as a prequel to the original Mystery Dungeon adventure. It follows ten‑year‑old Shiren and his weasel friend Koppa as they wander the mountains. While stopping for a meal in the village of Natane, a tribe of demons suddenly assaults the settlement.
Determined to protect the villagers, Shiren decides to build a castle as a defense. He collects building materials and other items by exploring nearby dungeons, turning each descent into a chance to strengthen the fortification.
