Summary

Fighting Force 64 drops you into a 3‑D beat ’em up where you pick one of four distinct fighters. Hawk Manson and Mace Daniels balance strength and speed, while Ben “Smasher” Jackson is a hulking bruiser who can hoist car engines, and Alana McKendricks darts around with a jump‑kick that packs a punch. Each character has a health‑cost special move that can turn the tide of a crowd.

The levels swing from a police‑blocked skyscraper to a neon‑lit shopping mall, a gritty subway and even a Coast Guard base, ending on Dr. Zeng’s island fortress. Along the way you can grab anything from soda cans and bottles to knives, chairs and guns, and the game lets you choose which territory to tackle next, adding a light branching feel to the otherwise linear brawl.

Developed by Core Design and originally pitched as a Streets of Rage sequel, the title landed on PlayStation and PC in 1997 before Crave Entertainment rescued the unfinished N64 build and released it as Fighting Force 64 in 1999. The console version shipped with slightly sharper graphics and a revised life system, and it went on to sell nearly 600 000 copies in the U.S. and a million worldwide, proving there was still appetite for a 3‑D arcade brawler.

Storyline

Fighting Force 64 follows four characters, each with their own motive for confronting the criminal mastermind Dr. Dex Zeng. Zeng had once forecast the apocalypse for the year 2000, but after New Year’s Eve 1999 he sensed a glitch in his plan and decided to trigger the end himself by destroying the world.

The game’s action opens with a police cordon around Zeng’s office skyscraper and then takes the player through a shopping mall, a subway, and a Coast Guard base before culminating at the summit of Zeng’s island headquarters.
