Summary
Fighters Destiny (known in Japan as Fighting Cup) stands out on the N64 thanks to its quirky point‑scoring system. Instead of a simple health bar, you race to seven points, earning one for a ring‑out, two for a throw, three for a knockout or counter, and four for a special move when the opponent is in the dizzy "Piyori" state. The health gauge even refills slowly during a bout, adding a subtle stamina element that keeps matches feeling fresh.
The game packs a surprising amount of content: a traditional versus mode, a two‑player showdown, a Master Challenge that lets you learn and save new moves to the Controller Pak, and oddball extras like Survival, where you try to stay ahead of the point tally, and Rodeo, a bizarre arena featuring a fighting cow named Ushi. Completing challenges unlocks five secret fighters—including the Swiss warrior Boro, the Russian joker Joker, and the robotic trainer Robert—expanding the roster beyond the nine base characters.
Critics praised the scoring mechanic and the depth of move‑learning, even dubbing it the best fighter on the N64 despite its low‑poly graphics, texture seams, and occasional slowdown. The English version even boasts an announcer voiced by Marc Silk, adding a playful radio‑DJ vibe.
Unfortunately, the title missed its holiday launch, sold only about 18,000 copies in its first two months, and was later discounted to $49.99. Still, its unique blend of strategy and silliness makes Fighters Destiny a memorable, if under‑appreciated, slice of late‑90s console fighting.
