Summary
FIFA Soccer 64 (often just called FIFA 64) brings a surprisingly deep soccer experience to the Nintendo 64, letting you pick from roughly 150 national and club squads and dive into everything from quick friendlies to full‑blown league seasons. The game’s two‑player mode makes it easy to challenge a buddy, while the choice between free‑wheeling Arcade rules and stricter Simulation settings lets you tailor the drama to your taste.
What really sets the title apart is its control depth: five preset setups range from Novice, where passes and special moves are handled for you, to Pro and Complex, which demand full manual input. The analog stick lets you modulate walking, jogging, running or sprinting, and the length you hold a button determines pass or shot velocity. You can pull off rainbow kicks, bicycle kicks, butterfly kicks, slide tackles, and even a "passback" mode that lets you dictate the ball‑carrier’s next move. Eight camera angles—including a picture‑in‑picture view—plus full team management (formations, strategies, player positions) give a surprisingly granular feel, all narrated by John Motson, Desmond Lynam and Andy Gray.
As the N64’s first soccer simulation and the first to use Dolby Surround, FIFA Soccer 64 was a technical milestone, but critics were split. Reviewers praised its realistic AI and licensing, yet many lamented jerky animation, choppy frame‑rates and controls that felt unresponsive, especially when compared to Konami’s International Superstar Soccer 64. The mixed reception reflects a game that aimed high, delivered some genuine thrills, but ultimately fell short of the era’s expectations.
