Summary
Excitebike 64 throws you into an extreme MX playground where hairpin turns erupt into walls of mud and a double no‑footed can‑can jump can turn you into an instant legend. The game’s 20 stadium tracks and sprawling outdoor courses are peppered with hidden shortcuts that demand a perfect blend of slowdown, direction change, or a turbo‑boosted leap over chasms, other bikes, and even buildings.
Six riders each bring a distinct handling style, and the bike gear feels authentic thanks to real‑world brands like Bell Helmets, Alpinestars and No Fear. A fractally generated Desert Track offers an endless desert where you must ignite ten campfires, while the track editor lets you craft fully functional courses that save directly into the cartridge. Mini‑games such as a giant‑ball soccer match, Stunt Course, Hill Climb, and the nostalgic Excite 3D keep the action fresh.
The developers used inverse kinematics to give riders lifelike tricks, and the Rumble Pak makes hard landings literally shake your hands. Limua’s enthusiastic commentary shouts out every crash and stunt, and a hidden cheat menu unlocks goofy extras like invisible riders, big heads, and even a picture of the programmers.
Critics praised the realistic physics, detailed graphics and sheer amount of content, earning an 88/100 on Metacritic and selling roughly two million copies. After its original N64 run, the title resurfaced on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2016 and on Nintendo Classics in 2023 (sans Fox Racing logos), proving that the thrill of high‑flying motocross still resonates today.
