Summary

Quest 64, known as Eltale Monsters in Japan, was the first true RPG to land on the Nintendo 64 and it still feels like a quirky experiment in handheld‑style design. The battle system never leaves the overworld; when a monster appears the screen simply locks the player in place while the four C‑buttons become wind, earth, water and fire spirits that you can upgrade by finding wispy white sprites. Unlike most RPGs, experience isn’t tied to a level‑up bar – taking hits boosts defense, landing blows raises attack, and each elemental upgrade unlocks fresh spells.

Money is completely absent; every item you need drops from chests, monsters, or is handed to you for free, and death merely shuttles you back to the last inn with all your spells and experience intact. A small compass‑clock in the HUD tracks day‑night cycles, opening or closing certain events depending on the time. The Japanese version added extra events and tightened the repetitive sections that many Western players found too easy.

Critics praised the cartridge‑based graphics and the inventive spell mechanic, but they also noted the game’s shallow puzzles and thin story. Still, for anyone who grew up on the N64, the quirky charm of Quest 64’s elemental magic and stat‑driven growth makes it a memorable, if imperfect, slice of late‑90s console RPG history.

Storyline

Eltale Monsters takes place in Celtland, a fantastical medieval realm that looks a lot like Ireland. Players control Brian, an apprentice mage who leaves his monastery to track down his missing father.

Brian discovers his father is hunting a thief who stole the Eletale Book, and the quest expands to gathering elemental gems that have been hoarded by powerful criminals. Collecting all the gems is required before the final confrontation with the game's boss.
