Summary

Earthworm Jim 3D marked the first time the quirky worm left Shiny Entertainment’s hands. After Interplay bought the franchise, they handed development to VIS Interactive, and the project switched from a canceled PlayStation build to the Nintendo 64, finally launching in 1999 with a later Windows port and Rockstar publishing the N64 version in North America.

The game trades the series’ 2‑D antics for sprawling 3‑D worlds, unlocking new brain locations by gathering Golden Udders and opening individual stages with Jim’s marbles. Players can wield thirteen bizarre weapons—from the Groovy Gun to the Chicken Gun—while wandering massive levels that hide pig‑sliding, grandma‑wrangling side mini‑games. The adventure spans fifteen zones, four brain‑sized arenas and a final mega‑boss, throwing out five distinct villains along the way.

Critics gave Earthworm Jim 3D a mixed reception, averaging around six‑out‑of‑ten. Reviewers praised its sound, graphics and off‑beat humor but lamented an unforgiving camera and the feeling that it struggled to keep up with contemporary platform giants like Banjo‑Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64.

Storyline

Earthworm Jim 3D opens with our worm hero being knocked unconscious by a massive flying cow. Clad in his indestructible, high‑tech super suit, Jim awakens inside his own subconscious, a bizarre 3‑D fun‑house of his mind.

Four mind chambers have been seized by his worst fears and past villains. To escape the coma he must collect the Golden Udders of Lucidity and Green Marbles to unlock each chamber and its internal levels.

Along the way Jim battles odd foes such as Psycrow, Disco Zombies, and even engages in pig‑sliding and grandma‑wrangling mini‑games. After defeating the four chamber bosses he finally confronts the personification of his trauma, Earthworm Kim, restoring his sanity.
