Summary

Duke Nukem 64 takes the classic alien‑smashing action and stretches it across 32 nonstop levels, from the neon streets of L.A. to an orbiting station and even the moon. The N64 port adds a fully 3D Cycloid Emperor boss, a Protector Drone that pops up from the Atomic Edition, and four brand‑new weapons – dual sub‑machine guns, a grenade launcher, a missile launcher and the plasma cannon – each with its own ammo type. Levels run sequentially and even borrow a quirky Duke Burger outlet from the Atomic Edition, while the original soundtrack was stripped to make room for the new Rumble Pak‑enabled explosions.

Multiplayer shines with a four‑player split‑screen "Dukematch" that lets you jet‑pack, crawl and blast through chaos together, though the massive weapons can crowd the screen. Critics praised the fresh arsenal and polygonal explosions, noting the game feels more intense than Doom 64 or Hexen, even if the sprite‑based enemies date it a bit. Despite censored dialogue and renamed items, the game retains Duke’s over‑the‑top personality, earning solid scores in the low‑70s on both GameRankings and Metacritic.
