Summary

Dream 64 was the ambitious, yet ultimately cancelled, N64 project Rare hatched after moving a stalled SNES RPG toward a 3‑D pirate‑themed adventure. For about sixteen months the Donkey Kong Country 2 crew built the game on Silicon Graphics workstations, blending Japanese‑style RPG mechanics with the playful spirit of LucasArts adventures. The hero swapped from a rabbit to the beloved bear Banjo, while the visual style grew from fairy‑tale to swash‑buckling.
Frame‑rate problems and the launch of Super Mario 64 nudged the team to scrap the original vision, retooling the assets into what became Banjo‑Kazooie and its sequels. The prototype still exists—Tim Stamper confirmed it in 2015, and Rare released a short documentary that December. Bits of Dream 64's pirate antagonist Captain Blackeye and other textures have resurfaced in Banjo‑Kazooie, Banjo‑Tooie and even the modern Sea of Thieves, making the lost game a hidden thread in Rare’s legacy.

Storyline

Dream 64 originally followed a kid named Edson, his dog Dinger and his parrot Billy as they became tangled with Captain Blackeye’s pirate crew. The pirates were after a mysterious substance called “floaty” that could make their ships fly, and when Edson crossed them he fled with his girlfriend to escape their clutches. When the project shifted to the Nintendo 64, the pirate motif took center stage and the protagonists were swapped out—first a rabbit, then Banjo the bear, who became the face of the re‑imagined title. Banjo’s adventure retained the sky‑bound pirate chase while shedding the original cast. Captain Blackeye later turned up as a cameo in Banjo‑Kazooie and Banjo‑Tooie, a nod to his roots in Dream.
