Summary

Dream 64, sometimes referred to as Project Dream, was Rare’s ambitious attempt to bring a full‑blown 3D RPG to the Nintendo 64 after an initial SNES concept. The Donkey Kong Country 2 crew spent sixteen months on Silicon Graphics workstations, borrowing the same rendering tricks that made DKC look groundbreaking, and they leaned heavily on Japanese RPGs and LucasArts adventure titles to give the game a distinct "Rare flavour." The concept shifted dramatically – first a rabbit hero, then finally Banjo the bear – and the sprawling pirate‑themed adventure eventually collapsed into a linear platformer reminiscent of DKC, plagued by frame‑rate hiccups that became impossible to ignore once Super Mario 64 set a new bar for smooth 3D play. When the project was finally shelved, its assets didn’t die; Captain Blackeye and other elements resurfaced in Banjo‑Kazooie, its sequel Banjo‑Tooie, and even the modern Sea of Thieves. A prototype was confirmed by Tim Stamper in 2015, and Rare later released a short documentary that same year, giving fans a rare glimpse of what might have been.

Storyline

The original premise of Dream (later Dream 64) followed a young boy named Edson, his dog Dinger and his parrot Billy, who become entangled with a band of pirates led by Captain Blackeye. The pirates are searching for a substance called “floaty” that would allow their ships to fly. After Edson gets into trouble with the pirates, he sets off on a journey with his girlfriend to escape them.
When the project shifted to the Nintendo 64, the pirate theme grew stronger and the protagonist was swapped first for a rabbit and finally for Banjo the bear, turning the re‑imagined game into Dream 64. Captain Blackeye later shows up as a cameo in Banjo‑Kazooie and Banjo‑Tooie, nodding to his original role in Dream.
