Summary
Dragon Sword, sometimes referred to as Dragon Sword 64, was a near‑complete Nintendo 64 action‑RPG that blended beat‑em‑up combat with dungeon‑crawling exploration. The nine‑person Team Storm built the game around fast, Tekken‑style melee encounters inspired by classics like Rastan Saga, Golden Axe and Vendetta, while still offering the loot‑and‑level progression of a Zelda‑type adventure. Players could have teamed up in a two‑player co‑op or jumped into a four‑player deathmatch featuring four distinct modes, and the title even supported the Rumble Pak for extra tactile feedback.
Despite positive previews – 64 Magazine gave it a 93 % score – MGM Interactive pulled the plug, fearing insufficient sales and lacking a publishing partner. The project resurfaced in 2019 when Piko Interactive acquired the source code and announced plans to finish it. An unfinished beta leaked in 2010, showcasing seven of the intended ten levels, though it remains riddled with bugs.
Storyline
Dragon Sword 64 (often just called Dragon Sword) centers on an ancient evil god that invades the realm of Avantaria, enslaving its inhabitants and shattering the Light God’s power. In response, the Light God summons four crusaders—Cutter, Kailan, Aisha, and Gouranga—to answer his call. The quartet travels across Avantaria, confronting monsters and gathering strength. Their ultimate goal is to defeat the invading deity, restore the Light God’s light, and free the people from bondage. The story blends classic fantasy tropes with a four‑hero quest to save the land.
