Summary
Doubutsu no Mori, known overseas as Animal Crossing, is Nintendo’s first experiment in a real‑time village life simulation. The game only ever shipped on a Nintendo 64 cartridge in Japan, making it a rare glimpse of the series before the GameCube remake. It runs best with the Expansion Pak, bumping the resolution from 320×240 to a sharp 640×480.
Players move into a charming town of talking animal residents, earn money by gathering wood, fruit, and fish, and gradually chip away at their mortgage. A built‑in real‑time clock mirrors the player’s own day‑night cycle, while the Controller Pak stores every diary entry and house upgrade.
Originally envisioned for the never‑released 64DD as a role‑playing adventure, the project shifted to a cartridge and embraced a non‑linear, community‑focused style that highlighted family and friendship. Because it was the last title Nintendo released for the console, it carries a sense of “end‑of‑an‑era” nostalgia for N64 collectors.
Storyline
In Doubutsu no Mori, known casually as Animal Forest, the adventure begins as a young boy or girl steps off a train into a quiet village populated by sentient, humanoid animals. The player’s gender and appearance are set by answers given to a chatty cat named Rover during the ride. Rover learns the newcomer has only the clothes on their back and 1,000 Bells, and he contacts his old friend Tom Nook to arrange help.
Tom Nook, a tanuki shopkeeper, greets the player with a modest house and a mortgage of 19,800 Bells. Paying off the loan unlocks the ability to expand the home, prompting further borrowing for larger upgrades. As the player gathers resources and fulfills daily tasks, the village slowly grows around them, turning a simple settlement into a bustling community.
