Summary

Donkey Kong 64 (often called DK64) feels like a playground that never stops expanding. You start as Donkey Kong, but rescuing his friends turns Chunky, Tiny, Diddy and Lanky into fully playable characters, each unlocking a distinct ability—Chunky can hoist rocks, Tiny shrinks, Diddy jets with a barrel, and Lanky floats with a trombone. The game rewards you with two banana currencies: colored bananas that earn medals and open boss doors, and golden bananas that gate each new world, meaning you’re constantly juggling collection and puzzle‑solving.

The eight themed worlds are linked by warp pads, so you can hop between sections in any order, and swap barrels let you switch Kongs on the fly. Cranky Kong runs a shop where banana coins buy new moves, weapons and even the occasional quirky combo that triggers a sniper view or a secret camera angle. Hidden within the overworld are playable versions of the original Donkey Kong and Jetpac, and animal forms like Rambi the Rhino and Enguarde the Swordfish appear when you discover the right power‑ups.

Multiplayer adds six split‑screen minigames, from the chaotic Monkey Smash deathmatch to the king‑of‑the‑hill Battle Arena, each supporting up to four players with the same projectile weapons you use in single‑player. Photographing hidden Banana Fairies unlocks cheats, bonus stages and even a seventh character, Krusha, for the arena. All of this runs on the required Expansion Pak, which delivers real‑time lighting and massive environments, while optional widescreen and Rumble Pak support polish the experience.

Storyline

In Donkey Kong 64, the gorilla Donkey Kong sets out on DK Isle after a brief tutorial. King K. Rool and his reptilian Kremlings have invaded the island, kidnapped the Kongs, and are trying to power up their Blast‑O‑Matic weapon to destroy the homeland. The player explores a variety of themed levels, gathering items and the coveted Golden Bananas while searching for the missing family members. Each rescued Kong brings new abilities that help further the quest. Ultimately, Donkey Kong must stop K. Rool’s plan and save the island from certain doom.
