Summary
Custom Robo bursts onto the Nintendo 64 with a mix of action‑RPG flair and toy‑collection excitement. Players assemble miniature battle robots from interchangeable parts, then launch them as cubes into cramped 3D holosseums where split‑second fights unfold.
The launch mechanic demands quick button taps to open the cube, and a lucky landing can give an early edge. Once the robo lands, an arsenal of guns, bombs, pods and a rocket‑punching arm can be swapped on the fly, while a jetpack offers daring dashes and evasive maneuvers. Each clash drains an endurance bar; when it empties the robo is knocked down, recovers briefly invulnerable, and can be sent back into the fray.
Victories reward parts that can be harvested from opponents at vending machines, feeding a cycle of ever‑more inventive builds for both campaign battles and multiplayer duels on a Memory Pak. Critics praised the responsive controls and clanky, absurdly satisfying sound design, even as some found the visual style quirky. A later re‑release on Nintendo Classics proved the formula still clicks with fans of fast, customizable combat.
Storyline
In Custom Robo for the Nintendo 64, the story kicks off when the player is handed a brand‑new Custom Robo named Ray on their birthday. That gift sparks a drive to hunt down rivals across the city, battling to snatch any spare parts they can find. Each victory not only boosts the player’s cash reserves but also adds new components to upgrade the Robo. The ultimate goal is to assemble the strongest machine and earn the title of Custom Robo Master.
