Summary

Conker's Bad Fur Day started life as a cute, family‑friendly platformer called Twelve Tales: Conker 64, but after a harsh reception at E3 the team at Rare completely rewrote it into a razor‑sharp satire for grown‑ups. The result is a game that still feels like a classic Rare platformer—bright, colorful, and full of hidden secrets—while peppering every level with graphic violence, booze, profanity, and absurd pop‑culture jokes. Its 64 MB cartridge even allowed extensive voice acting, giving the squirrel a surprisingly snarky personality.

Gameplay is built around a series of linear challenges that reward cash, which you need to unlock new areas of the overworld. Conker can run, jump, swing a frying pan, and use context‑sensitive pads to temporarily become an anvil, pull out a shotgun, or fire a slingshot. Health is restored by munching anti‑gravity chocolate, and the simple control set keeps the focus on puzzle‑solving, boss fights, and the occasional shooter segment.

The multiplayer side is a chaotic playground of seven distinct modes—Beach, Raptor, Heist, War, Tank, Race, and Deathmatch—each pitting up to four players against each other in wildly themed battles, from amphibious assaults on stuffed‑bear armies to bank‑robbing showdowns. It’s a perfect way to extend the game’s irreverent humor beyond the single‑player adventure.

Storyline

Conker's Bad Fur Day opens in the Fairy Panther King's Kingdom, where the hub area called Windy links to locations such as the farm Barn Boys, the poo‑filled Sloprano, Heist, the horror‑themed Spooky, Bats Tower and It’s War. The only other entry point is Uga Buga, accessed beneath Sloprano after paying the weasel guards a thousand dollars. The day after a 21st‑birthday binge, a hungover Conker wanders away from the pub and awakens in this strange land, determined to get home to his girlfriend Berri. Along the way he discovers piles of cash and is drawn into bizarre quests: retrieving a beehive from giant wasps, confronting the opera‑singing Great Mighty Poo, bombing a caveman village for Don Weaso, becoming a bat for Count Batula, and fighting in a war between grey squirrels and Nazi‑styled teddy bears called the Tediz. Conker finally reaches Berri, only for Don Weaso to lure them into a trap set by the Panther King. Berri is shot, the King dies when a creature named Heinrich bursts from his chest, and Professor Von Kriplespac reveals they are aboard a spaceship. After a chaotic space battle Conker decapitates Heinrich, is crowned king, delivers a bitter monologue about appreciating what you have, and the game ends with him stumbling back to the empty pub where it all began.
