Summary
Bomberman 64 (known in Japan as Baku Bomberman) takes the classic bomb‑throwing formula into full 3D, letting the player walk in eight directions while the camera rotates around eight viewpoints and offers three zoom levels. The explosions are spherical instead of the familiar cross shape, and every bomb can be "pumped" for a bigger blast—once pumped, it can’t be kicked or tossed again. Because Bomberman can’t jump, the game forces you to master "bomb jumping" by using remote‑detonated bombs to launch yourself onto higher platforms, a mechanic that feels essential for exploring the adventure stages.
In single‑player mode you wander through four planetary terrariums, each with two puzzle stages and two boss encounters, before tackling the Black Fortress and the hidden Rainbow Palace after collecting all 120 gold cards. Hearts act as a one‑time shield, disappearing in Hard mode, while power‑ups you gather stay with you until you run out of credits. Multiplayer returns with the classic battle arenas, and you can even create a custom Bomberman and save it to a Controller Pak or the internal EEPROM.
A later Wii U Virtual Console release let new players experience the game in 2017, and a "Full Power" cheat unlocks eight bombs, five flame length, power and remote bombs right from the start, turning every match into an explosive free‑for‑all.
Storyline
Bomberman 64 opens with a tranquil world called Blue Resort, which is suddenly raided by the space pirate Artemis and her crew. From the Black Fortress, their leader Altair uses the stolen Omni Cube to drain the planet’s energy, turning it into a lifeless husk and setting his sights on Planet Bomber, Bomberman’s home. A mysterious white‑clad warrior named Sirius appears, explaining that a force field protects the fortress and can be disabled by destroying four anchors – the Green Garden, Blue Resort, Red Mountain and White Glacier – while supplying Bomberman with power‑ups and new techniques.
With Sirius’s help Bomberman shatters each anchor, killing Artemis and Orion; Regulus survives. Once the field is down, they infiltrate the fortress, confront Altair and defeat him. Regulus attempts a rescue, but Sirius intervenes, claiming the Omni Cube for himself and fleeing to his hidden Rainbow Palace.
Bomberman chases Sirius into the palace, where Regulus unexpectedly aids him, knocking Sirius away and destroying the Omni Cube. The palace crashes into the Black Fortress, ending the threat. Regulus departs, promising a future rematch, while Bomberman celebrates his victory.
In Adventure mode, players guide Bomberman through 24 perilous areas, battling Altair’s allies, destroying their bases and restoring peace to Planet Bomber.
