Summary
Blast Corps stands out on the Nintendo 64 for turning demolition into a puzzle‑solving sport. I’m constantly swapping between eight wildly different vehicles—a bulldozer that shoves debris, a dump truck that carries massive loads, a buggy that darts over gaps, even three robot mechs with extendable arms—to clear a frantic path for a runaway nuclear missile carrier. The overhead view lets me zoom and pan, while the cheery soundtrack ramps up as the timer ticks, adding a surprisingly tense rhythm to each of the 57 levels.
What really grabs me is the hidden depth Rare packed into a modest team of recent grads. Inspired by Donkey Kong’s platforming and Mario Kart 64’s drift, the game blends tight vehicle physics with clever level design, rewarding exploration after the clock runs out. Secret communication points unlock timed challenges, and the ghost‑run feature lets me race against my own best runs, pushing for gold and platinum medals.
Critics loved the originality, noting the fully polygonal worlds and the lack of distance fog—a technical feat for its time. Sales hit about a million copies, and the title earned multiple editor’s choice awards before resurfacing in Rare Replay and the Nintendo Classics service, proving that its demolition mayhem still feels fresh today.
Storyline
Blast Corps puts you in the middle of a high‑stakes emergency. A nuclear missile carrier has gone off‑rails and is barreling toward a populated city.
You control a team of demolition rigs, racing against the clock to tear down anything—houses, farms, bridges—that stands in the carrier’s way. By clearing the path you stop the carrier from crashing, averting a catastrophic explosion and saving the region.
