Summary
Resident Evil 2, known in Japan as Biohazard 2, made a surprisingly bold leap onto the Nintendo 64. The team squeezed the two‑disc PlayStation classic onto a single 64 MB cartridge, using aggressive compression and the console’s real‑time processing power to keep the full‑motion video cutscenes intact. The result was a technical showcase that still feels fresh when you fire a shotgun at a stumbling zombie.
The N64 version adds a handful of exclusive tricks: a randomizer that reshuffles item locations, alternate costumes for both Leon and Claire, and a dial‑in system for violence level and blood colour. Sixteen hidden "Ex Files" documents pepper the four scenarios, offering lore nuggets that tie the game into later entries. A more responsive first‑person control scheme replaces the original tank controls, letting the analog stick feel almost native to the horror experience.
Visually, the cartridge adapts its resolution on the fly and, with the Expansion Pak, can push to 640×480 while delivering smoother animations and sharper textures. Audio was rebuilt from scratch, culminating in a Dolby Surround soundtrack that still earns praise from reviewers. Critics highlighted the analog control’s precision and the surround sound as standout upgrades, and the port sold over 326 000 copies in the United States, cementing its reputation as one of the most ambitious console ports ever attempted.
Storyline
Resident Evil 2 (Biohazard 2) on the Nintendo 64 follows the canon route where players experience the Claire‑A and Leon‑B scenarios. On September 30, 1998, two months after the original outbreak, the Midwestern town of Raccoon City is overrun by zombies created by Umbrella’s T‑virus. Rookie officer Leon S. Kennedy meets college student Claire Redfield, who is searching for her brother Chris, and the two are soon separated while trying to reach the Raccoon Police Station. Inside, they discover most officers dead, learn that Chief Brian Irons was bribed to hide Umbrella’s secret G‑virus project, and encounter the relentless Tyrant known as Mr. X.
Claire befriends a frightened girl, Sherry Birkin, and later teams up with Ada Wong, who claims to be looking for her Umbrella‑researcher boyfriend. Ada picks up Sherry’s golden pendant—actually a sample of the G‑virus—and reluctantly assists Leon after he saves her from a bullet. The Birkin family’s tragedy unfolds as William Birkin injects himself with the G‑virus, mutating into a monstrous creature that hunts Sherry for her genetics, while his wife Annette tries to seize the pendant and is killed by her husband.
Ada is gravely wounded in a battle with the Tyrant, and she and Leon confess their love before she dies. Claire uses Annette’s dying instructions to create a vaccine that cures Sherry, and the survivors escape on a self‑destructing train that destroys the giant Super Tyrant and the mutated William. After the city is incinerated to cover up Umbrella’s crimes, Leon vows to take down the corporation, Claire continues her search for Chris, and HUNK completes his G‑virus retrieval mission.
A radio drama sequel shows Sherry fleeing Umbrella agents, eventually reaching Canada with help from a girl named Meg, while Ada intercepts the pendant in France, confronts new Umbrella threats, and decides to quit spying, confirming that the T‑virus case may be closed but Umbrella’s experiments are far from over.
