Summary
Bomberman 64 (known in Japan as Baku Bomberman) broke the series’ 2‑D tradition by moving the action into full 3‑D, giving the player eight‑directional movement and a rotating camera. Explosions spread in a sphere rather than the classic cross, and the game lets you "pump" a bomb while holding it for a bigger blast—once pumped, the bomb can’t be kicked again. Because Bomberman can’t jump, players master "bomb jumping" by using remote‑detonated bombs to reach higher platforms and hidden areas.
The core mechanics stay true to the franchise: you can kick, pick up, and throw bombs at any time, and a simple heart power‑up lets you survive a hit by dropping the heart for a second chance. Getting hit or colliding with enemies makes Bomberman dizzy, opening the chance for enemies to toss him around or for you to fling them back. Bosses mirror your own bomb attacks, and on Hard mode even a single touch can leave you spinning.
The adventure is split into four planetary terrariums, each with two puzzle stages and two boss stages, followed by the Black Fortress finale. Collecting five gold cards per level (120 total) unlocks the hidden Rainbow Palace and a "Full Power" cheat that starts you with eight bombs, five flames, power and remote bombs. The extra cards also add multiplayer courses.
Development was turbulent: after six months the team scrapped their original design to keep up with emerging 3‑D titles, and the revamped game debuted at E3 1997.
Critics praised the single‑player mode for its inventive bomb‑bridging and tower‑building puzzles, while noting that the multiplayer arenas felt weaker than earlier Bomberman entries, leading to mixed overall reviews.
Storyline
The opening of Baku Bomber Man shows the tranquil world of Blue Resort, its gardens and rivers, before the space pirate Artemis and her troops swoop in. From the Black Fortress, Altair watches and uses the coveted Omni Cube to drain the planet’s energy, turning it into a zombie‑like husk. Satisfied, the pirates set their sights on Planet Bomber, the home of the hero Bomberman. Bomberman watches the fortress descend and is approached by a white‑clad warrior named Sirius, who explains that a force field protects the fortress and can be disabled by destroying four anchors: Green Garden, Blue Resort, Red Mountain and White Glacier. With Sirius’s power‑ups, Bomberman shatters each anchor, killing Artemis and Orion while Regulus survives. The field drops, they infiltrate the fortress, defeat Altair and, after a brief rescue attempt by Regulus, Sirius snatches the Omni Cube and betrays Bomberman, fleeing to his secret lair, the Rainbow Palace. Chasing Sirius into the Rainbow Palace, Bomberman confronts the traitor just as Regulus intervenes, knocking Sirius away and destroying the Omni Cube. With the cube gone, the palace crashes into the Black Fortress, annihilating both structures. Regulus escapes, promising a future rematch, while Bomberman celebrates his hard‑won victory.
