Summary

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes (often just called Sarge's Heroes) drops you into colorful 3D battlefields where plastic Green Army troops fight for control of everyday objects. The Nintendo 64 version lets up to four friends duke it out in split‑screen deathmatch, capture‑the‑flag, or base‑invasion modes, and even offers a Family Mode that lets each player pick a difficulty and a weapon set that’s easy to pick up. The game boasts 13 weapon variations, from a trusty M16 to a flamethrower, bazooka and mine detector, each tied to rescued commandos who drop their gear when you free them. Lose a life and you’re back to the default rifle, which makes weapon management a surprisingly tactical layer – sometimes it’s smarter to lay mines and detonate them with a grenade than to blast a tank head‑on. Movement feels surprisingly fluid for a N64 title: you can jump, climb, crawl, crouch, strafe and even sneak, all thanks to context‑sensitive buttons that echo the control scheme of Ocarina of Time. The camera defaults to a steady over‑the‑shoulder view, but you can flip to front‑facing or first‑person with a single press. Behind the scenes, technical director Dan Geisler built the Plastosheen engine, using mathematical formulas to fake realistic light reflections while keeping frame rates steady across massive arenas. Hand‑drawn character animation, art direction by Nina Stanley, and a team of programmers and artists pushed the N64’s graphics farther than many of its contemporaries, giving Sarge’s Heroes a distinct visual polish that still feels fresh today.

Storyline

Army Men – Sarge's Heroes puts you in the plastic‑plastic war between the Green Army and General Plastro’s Tan Army. The Green forces, led by Colonel Grimm, are trying to rescue Grimm’s daughter Vikki, a reporter for the Green Star News, after she’s captured by the Tan troops. The Tan Army has discovered portals to "Our World" – the human realm – where everyday objects become powerful weapons for the plastic soldiers.

The single‑player campaign follows Sargent Hawk, the surviving leader of Bravo Company, as he escorts Grimm to an escape helicopter while battling both Tan soldiers and rogue Green troops. Bravo’s colorful roster includes Riff, a bazooka‑wielding bluesman; Hoover, a skinny minesweeper with precise movements; Sharp, a surfer‑styled mortar man; Thick, an M‑60 machine‑gunner with blunt intellect; and Scorch, a fire‑loving flamethrower.

Missions flip between "Their World," where the plastic troops are human‑sized and fight across bases, forests, towns and snowy wastelands, and "Our World," where they shrink to toy‑size and clash on kitchen counters, sandboxes, backyards, living rooms, bedrooms, gardens and even bathrooms, facing oversized foes like a giant spider.
