Summary
Animal Crossing, known in Japan as Dōbutsu no Mori, feels like stepping into a living diary where every day unfolds at its own pace. You arrive by train, meet a chatty cat named Rover, and answer a few quirky questions that decide your avatar’s gender and look. Tom Nook, the ever‑smiling shopkeeper, hands you a modest house and a mortgage of 19,800 Bells, nudging you into a gentle cycle of collecting shells, fish, and fruit to pay it off. The village starts with six animal neighbors, each with distinct personalities and homes, and as you befriend them more residents can move in, up to fifteen at once. What’s striking is how the game swaps Japanese holidays for Western ones in its western version, keeping the core theme of community, friendship, and the simple joy of everyday life.
Storyline
In Animal Crossing (also known as Doubutsu no Mori on the Nintendo 64), one of the opening‑cutscene goals is to expand the size of your house. You start as a brand‑new resident, and the gender and appearance of your character are decided by the answers you give to a cat named Rover while riding the train into town. Progress is saved by chatting with the Gyroid that sits beside your home; if you turn off the console or reset without saving, any unsaved achievements disappear, though the rest of the world stays intact. After such a reset, the mole Mr. Resetti will appear at your doorstep to lecture you, while his calmer older brother Don sometimes shows up instead, gently reminding you to hit the save button.
