Summary

Akumajou Dracula Mokushiroku – Real Action Adventure, often called Castlevania 64, was Konami’s bold leap into true 3D for the series. The game lets you pick either Carrie Fernandez, a magic‑wielding orphan, or Reinhardt Schneider, a Belmont heir with a trusty whip, and thrusts you into Dracula’s sprawling French‑inspired estate. Combat feels deeper than the 2D classics: you lock on to enemies, switch between a ranged attack (orbs for Carrie, whip for Reinhardt) and a close‑quarters strike, and manage sub‑weapons powered by red jewels instead of hearts.

Platforming is a constant test of timing – rotating floors, crumbling ledges, even invisible steps that hide secret items. The designers borrowed heavily from real architecture: the Villa mirrors the façade of Château d'Azay‑le‑Rideau, while the castle’s silhouette echoes Mont Saint‑Michel. Hidden throughout are nods to earlier titles, like Carrie’s alternate dress that pays homage to Maria Renard from Rondo of Blood.

A subtle day/night cycle changes enemy strength and opens sun‑ or moon‑locked doors, while an internal clock can even affect the ending if you dawdle too long. The soundtrack, a blend of harpsichord and synth, includes a violin rendition of the classic "Bloodlines" theme, adding a haunting ambience that fits the game’s survival‑horror moments. All progress is saved on the N64’s Controller Pak via scattered white jewels, keeping the experience firmly rooted in the era’s hardware quirks.

Storyline

Akumajou Dracula Mokushiroku – Real Action Adventure (often called Castlevania 64) opens in 1852, when Dracula rises from a century‑long slumber as humanity’s wickedness grows. Two young heroes—Carrie Fernandez, a magic‑gifted girl, and Reinhardt Schneider, heir of the Belmont vampire‑hunter line—venture into the Count’s Wallachian castle to stop him. Inside they encounter an aristocratic vampire warning of doom, the aged hunter Charles Vincent, the reluctant vampire Rosa, the demonic salesman Renon, and a mysterious boy named Malus. The heroes navigate a maze‑like villa, battle the servants Actrise and Death, and climb the castle’s towers toward the Room of Clocks.

The outcome hinges on how quickly the player reaches the second chamber on the stairs to the Castle Keep. Taking fifteen days or fewer triggers the good route: Vincent arrives in time, the true Dracula (Malus) is revealed, and after a final battle against a centipede‑dragon form, Carrie or Reinhardt receive a hopeful ending. Taking sixteen days or more leads to a bad route: Vincent is turned into a vampire, Malus is mistaken for merely possessed, and the heroes face a darker conclusion.

Both endings feature poignant moments—Carrie placing a nosegay on her stepmother’s grave, or Reinhardt witnessing Rosa’s revival—tying the game’s gothic narrative together.
