Summary
The World Is Not Enough pushes the Nintendo 64’s hardware to its limits, using an engine tuned for fast frame rates, particle explosions, dynamic lighting and long draw distances. With the Expansion Pak plugged in, textures sharpen and visual effects like fog and smoke become more pronounced, all packed onto a 32 MB cartridge that holds over 500 lines of compressed speech.
Four‑player split‑screen lets you dive into 14 multiplayer maps, swapping between classic deathmatch, capture‑the‑flag, king‑of‑the‑hill and quirky modes like Last Agent Standing or Uplink, with bots that can be tweaked for health and appearance. The single‑player campaign spans 14 missions, each packed with objectives ranging from hostage rescues to vehicle destruction, and even a rail‑shooter ski run. Bond’s gadget‑laden wristwatch can stun, fire tranquilizer darts, grapple or laser‑unlock doors, while a toolbox of pistols, SMGs, rifles, shotguns, grenade and rocket launchers offers alternate fire modes and silencer options.
Critics praised the game’s smooth performance and graphics, often drawing favorable comparisons to GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, though enemy AI was noted as uneven. In the U.S. it moved over a million copies, cementing its place as a standout first‑person shooter on the N64.
Storyline
The Nintendo 64 game 007 – The World Is Not Enough puts players in a single‑player campaign as secret agent James Bond, racing to stop a terrorist who plans a nuclear meltdown in the waters of Istanbul. The plot mirrors the film, beginning with Bond sent to Spain to meet a banker and retrieve money for Robert King, a friend of M who bought a classified Russian Atomic Energy report taken from a dead MI6 operative. The report is believed to detail terrorists who attacked King’s oil pipeline in Kazakhstan; after the banker is killed by an assassin, Bond escapes with the cash and heads to MI6 headquarters in London.
A terrorist strike on MI6 forces Bond into a chase through the London Underground, ending with the assassin blowing herself up in a hot‑air balloon. MI6 traces the money to KGB‑turned‑terrorist Renard, who previously kidnapped King’s daughter Elektra, and M orders Bond to protect her while she oversees a new pipeline in Azerbaijan.
While touring the proposed pipeline route in the mountains, Bond and Elektra are ambushed by a hit squad on snow‑mobiles equipped with paraglider gear. Suspecting Elektra’s security chief Davidov, Bond eliminates him and boards a flight to a Russian ICBM base in Kazakhstan, where he meets nuclear physicist Christmas Jones and learns Renard has stolen plutonium from a warhead.
Former Russian mafia figure Valentin Zukovsky reveals Elektra was exchanged for the use of a submarine captained by his nephew. Jones warns that if Renard inserts the stolen plutonium into the submarine’s reactor, the ensuing explosion would destroy Istanbul and sabotage the Bosporus oil pipeline.
In Istanbul, Bond and Jones are captured; Jones is taken aboard the submarine while Bond is left at the Maiden’s Tower. With Zukovsky’s help, Bond kills Elektra, boards the submarine, confronts Renard in the reactor, kills him, and escapes with Jones, thwarting the nuclear threat.
