Summary
Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II lets me slip back into Mike Jones’ boots for another time‑bending quest. The NES sequel keeps the heart‑container health system but adds full 8‑directional diagonal movement and the ability to turn mid‑jump, which instantly feels more fluid. New gear like Tink’s Axe, Cleopatra’s bronze dagger, Leonardo’s katana and the upgradeable Psychic Shock Wave (whose power grows with every extra heart container) give each enemy a distinct weakness. A battery‑backed save makes the sprawling adventure across more than a dozen stages tolerable.
The game is split into nine chapters, each set in a vivid historical era—from the Stone Age to Victorian England—populated by period‑specific foes, puzzles and bosses. Along the way I run into figures such as Cleopatra, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes, Leonardo da Vinci and King Arthur, all offering hints or weapons. The final showdown pits me against Zoda’s three clones, making every era feel like a stepping stone toward stopping his revenge.
Storyline
StarTropics II, aka Zoda’s Revenge, follows Mike Jones after rescuing Princess Mica, who telepathically sends a pod cipher. Decoding it with Dr. Jones sends Mike to the Stone Age, where he saves a tribe’s children from a wild boar and discovers the first Tetrad.
The adventure jumps to Ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, the Middle Ages and other eras, each hiding a Tetrad. While aiding Sherlock Holmes in a museum robbery, Mike learns that Zoda‑X, the alien he previously defeated, is also after the fragments.
After defeating Zoda‑X, Holmes deduces Zoda‑Y and Zoda‑Z exist. Mike tracks Zoda‑Y to Transylvania, defeats him, secures the final Tetrad and receives word that Zoda‑Z has attacked C‑Island, the Argonians’ home.
Returning to the present, Mike battles Zoda‑Z and wins. The C‑Island chief helps reassemble the Tetrads, causing Hirocon, Mica’s father and Argonian leader, to appear. Hirocon explains he sealed himself inside the Tetrads and scattered them through time before the invasion, then departs to rebuild Argonia.
