Summary
Yume Penguin Monogatari, sometimes called "Dream Penguin Story," is a bizarre hybrid of platforming and side‑scroll shooting that Konami slipped onto the Famicom in early 1991. Instead of lives, you watch a fitness meter that tracks Penta’s weight; a beating heart marks the target weight for each stage. Collecting diet drinks shrinks you, unlocking a kick in the normal range and a limitless "PO" projectile when you’re thin, while getting hit by enemies or food plumps you back up and even slows your jumps. Falling into water resets you to your fattest state, and a hit in a platform level can shave ten seconds off the clock. The game’s six stages alternate between classic run‑and‑jump levels and 2‑D shooter segments, with the final stage blending both styles. Though it never saw a US release, a 1998 fan translation (updated in ’99) and a later 2003 patch finally let English‑speaking players experience this quirky take on obesity and penguin heroics.
Storyline
In Yume Penguin Monogatari, you play as Penta, a blue penguin whose love life is in trouble because his girlfriend Penko dumped him for being too chubby. Determined to win her back, Penta must shed the excess weight by gathering diet drinks while dodging enemies sent by Penko’s new boyfriend, the stylish Ginji, who tries to force‑feed him back to obesity. Each level imposes a weight target and a time limit; failing to meet the goal triggers a break‑up call from Penko. The climax arrives in the second half of the sixth stage, where Penta finally confronts Ginji in a showdown. The game ends with Penta and Penko flying to a tropical island, only for Penko to overindulge herself, leaving Penta stunned and slapping his head in disbelief.
