Summary

Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished – often just called Ys – lands on the NES as a surprisingly fresh take on the 1987 Falcom classic. You step into the boots of the wandering swordsman Adol Christin, navigating a top‑down world where towns, fields and dungeons have been completely re‑mapped for the cartridge. The game’s hallmark “bump” combat still drives every encounter, but here your reflexes truly matter: the angle of contact decides the damage, and a recharging health bar keeps the action flowing. Along the way, bizarre characters hand out cryptic clues while you hunt the six legendary Books of Ys, each hidden in cavernous towers brimming with monsters and treasure. Victor Musical Industries swapped the original soundtrack for new tracks, and even the final battle feels distinct, earning the version a respectable 30 / 40 from Famitsu.

Storyline

The NES action‑RPG Ys drops you into the mist‑shrouded land of Esteria, a realm whose ancient civilization vanished some 700 years ago. Six magical books preserve the history and the deeds of the Goddesses who once saved the kingdom from ruin.

The fortune‑teller Sara appears in the Town of Minea, hands a crystal to the wandering swordsman Adol Christin and sends him to Zepik Village to meet her aunt, the keeper of the key that will unlock the first Book. Dark Dekt, a sorcerer of diabolical magic, threatens to plunge the world into darkness.

Adol’s mission is to recover all six Books, learn the lost knowledge of the vanished Ys civilization and use it to call down the Goddesses and defeat the looming evil. The floating island of Ys is referenced as part of the ancient lore that guides his quest.
