Summary

Ys II – Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter on the NES (known in Japan as the Famicom version) feels like a nostalgic bridge between classic 8‑bit action and the deeper systems Falcom later added. The game keeps the beloved “bump” combat where you charge into foes, but it also introduces a modest magic system—fire spells become essential, especially since most bosses can’t be knocked down by bumping and must be burned away. Your hero Adol still tracks the usual RPG stats—HP, attack, defense, and a new MP gauge for spellcasting—so grinding for experience still matters. The soundtrack, crafted by Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa, and Hideya Nagata, adds a surprisingly rich layer of melody that stands out on the NES’s limited hardware. Famitsu’s 27/40 rating hints at the mixed reception it received at launch, yet the title’s later English releases and countless ports show how this quirky, bump‑and‑spell hybrid has endured in the retro community.

Storyline

Ys II – Ancient Ys Vanished – The Final Chapter picks up right where the original Ys left off. A bright light erupts from Darm Tower, and the hero Adol Christin finds himself on a floating island in the heavens, rescued by a young girl named Lilia. She brings him to her home in Lance Village, where he learns that the events of the first game were part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated by a greater evil linked to the kingdom of Ys itself. Determined to unravel the island’s secrets, Adol sets out to rid both Ys and Esteria of the looming threat. His archenemy Dark Fact’s masterful foe already knows his whereabouts, forcing Adol to confront the evil entity behind the darkness.
