Summary
Yie Ar Kung‑Fu on the NES feels like a compact slice of fighting‑game history, packing the genre‑shaping ideas of its arcade ancestor into a cartridge you could pop into your living‑room console. The game swaps the old point‑scoring system for a health meter, so each bout feels like a true knockout race rather than a tally of hits. You control Oolong – a clear homage to Bruce Lee – and can string together up to 16 moves by mixing joystick directions with the two buttons, hitting high, middle or low depending on your stance. The NES version trims the roster to five distinct foes: a pole‑wielding Wang, fire‑spitting Tao, chain‑armed Chen, star‑style Lang, and the mysterious leader Wu/Mu of the Chop Suey Gang, each demanding a different tactical approach. After defeating Wu/Mu the game loops with tougher enemies and fresh background colors, keeping the challenge fresh long after the initial tournament feels won.
Storyline
In Yie Ar Kung-Fu (Rev 1.4) for the NES, the player controls Oolong, a lifelong martial‑arts student who enters the Throne Cup tournament to honor his late father’s final wish. The competition takes place across two distinct fighting arenas, and Oolong’s goal is to claim the Throne Cup and the title of Grand Master.
The game emphasizes Oolong’s preparation: he has trained his whole life for the Martial Arts Championship, which draws masters skilled with weapons such as shuriken, nunchaku, bo staffs, chains and more. Throughout the bouts he must rely on his own moves while confronting these diverse opponents to fulfill his destiny.
It’s worth noting that the MSX/Famicom version tells a different story, sending a character named Lee into the Menma Tower to dismantle the Chop Suey Gang, rather than focusing on Oolong’s tournament quest.
