Summary
The NES port of Xenophobe drops you into a cramped space station where a ticking clock forces you to exterminate every alien before time runs out. Each map can span several floors, and you’ll hop between them via elevators or exposed holes while hunting down the hostile Xenos.
Enemies evolve in stages: a simple Pod can hatch into a health‑draining Critter, which matures into a rolling Rollerbaby, and eventually becomes a leaping Snotterpillar. Occasionally a Festor lurks in doorways, hypnotizing you and hatching eggs that turn into fresh Pods.
Power‑ups appear as weapon upgrades or health kits, letting you tackle the infestation more aggressively. A successful run ends one of three ways: the station is evacuated when the timer expires, you trigger a self‑destruct for a points bonus, or you clear all enemies to secure the station and reap the largest rewards. Nine off‑beat characters—ranging from Mr. M.Brace to the duck‑headed Dr. Kwack—add a quirky, multiplayer flavor to the chaos.
Xenophobe later resurfaced in several Midway arcade compilations, preserving its frantic co‑op charm for modern consoles.
Storyline
In the NES game Xenophobe, players take on the role of a space‑faring crew tasked with defending humanity’s outposts. Starbases, moons, ships, and sprawling space cities become hotbeds of alien infestation. Each location is gradually overtaken as the extraterrestrials multiply, creating a race against time. The objective is simple yet urgent: eliminate the alien hordes before any site is completely overrun. Success means the colonies survive; failure leaves the cosmos lost to the alien threat.
